Waffle Time was released in 2023 and combines strategic gameplay with a strong waffle decorating theme. In Waffle Time, players have to delicately balance maximizing their fruit patterns, but placing syrup on their fruit and cream before the game ends.
Opening the Box
Waffle Time has decent quality for a $30 board game. The toppings, player boards, and draft board are all made up of durable material and are the typical chipboard. The syrup beads are plastic, although I honestly wished they were glass. It would definitely be a nice upgrade to the game. But in general, Waffle Time has average-quality components and pieces that neither impressed me nor disappointed me.
Learning the Game
The main premise of the game is that players place toppings of strawberries, bananas, blueberries, cherries, blackberries, syrup, and cream on their waffle. As the game plays out, certain fruit patterns allow players to place syrup beads on their waffle, which will earn them points. Players also earn points based on certain fruit and syrup arrangements. After eight rounds, the player with the most points wins the game.
The rules to Waffle Time are what I would consider simple; they take about five minutes to learn. The publisher's age recommendation is correct; any person 10+ can play without help. Just like most board games, Waffle Time takes 1-2 rounds for players to get the hang of the game. Really, the hardest part is pushing your brain to figure out patterns to maximize the points you can earn.
Playing the Game
When I played Waffle Time, I was surprised to see that it was fun and engaging to play. I expected the game to be unbalanced, but it was very well thought out and was really enjoyable to play. My favorite element about the game is the strong waffle theme. It's what convinced me to buy the game and what makes it unique in my collection. Players have to strategically place cream and toppings in particular patterns. A catch is that the toppings have to be laid in a particular order, cream first then fruit. The arrangement of certain fruit allows players to place syrup on top of toppings. This makes players think about their turns and where they place toppings. Also, Waffle Time has only eight rounds, which makes it tricky and tight to get toppings and syrup on one's waffle before the game ends.
My Takeaway
Overall, Waffle Time is a unique game that gave me some laughs. Waffle Time is able to blend a fun theme with strategic tile placement. I would recommend the game to board game collectors or families looking for a distinctive and entertaining board game to own.
