Written Review of Camel Up

This revised edition of Camel Up was released in 2018. Personally, this is one of my favorite games to play with family or friends. It has made my top ten board games I've ever played. Camel Up is able to blend chance and betting into a fun, funny, and memorable board game.

Opening The Box
I've been impressed with the quality of Camel Up's components. I've found that the pieces have all held up after many uses. The dice pyramid (which really acts as a dice tower and cool aesthetic) is really cool and most players I've played with LOVE it. I would definitely consider it an improvement over the first edition. The seven camels are also very nice and not hollow or cheap plastic. They are a little heavier than one would expect, but I find that it works great when they need to be stacked. The centerpiece of this game is the pop-up game board. I've never seen any board game have this, it really impressed me and many players I've played with. Overall, Camel Up was a game that impressed with its quality. It really is an upgrade compared to the first edition.

Learning The Game
Camel Up has very simple rules. They are quick to pick up with new players and family. That is a positive thing for me about this game and any family game. I would recommend this game for ages 7-8+. I definitely think they could learn how to play without help. I've also found, many times while playing, that the more players that can play, the better. It makes players’ decisions and consequences harder. With a two- or three-player game, players can easily fix a strategic mistake.

Playing The Game
The main premise of the game, which is what I really love, is that the camels often do unexpected things. That is what the game is built around. On players’ turns, they choose one of four actions to perform. In my opinion, there are really only two main actions players perform. They bet on camels and roll the dice to move them.

There are 5 colored camels that race around the track. There are also two crazy camels, which are a nice edition and something I always love playing with. As the camels move around the track, players bet on what camel will end up in the lead at the end of the round and the game. The randomness of what camels do, because they are controlled by dice, is what makes the game dicey. Usually, players will constantly be switching the camels they bet on because they move very randomly. The downside to the randomness is that Camel Up doesn't contain a lot of strategy. That leads me to one of the only negatives about this game: players need to know that this is a game of chance. Playing with extremely strategic players can prove very boring in my experience. I've played with some players that get frustrated with the unpredictability of this game. Players need to realize this game is more focused on laughs and crazy moments over strategic gameplay.

My Takeaway
Overall, Camel Up is one of my favorite family games to play. Its versatility of gameplay with young families, teenagers, and grandparents makes it a great go-to game. I love playing it with my friends, and it never fails to bring us fun laughs and memorable moments!
