Reese Witherspoon Reveals She Embarrasses Her Kids on Purpose & Her Reasoning Actually Makes a Lot of Sense

Sometimes parents accidentally embarrass their kids — “what, like it’s hard?!” — but others like to do it on purpose. Including Legally Blonde alum Reese Witherspoon. The mom of three proudly admitted that she embarrasses her three children on purpose, and we actually totally support her reasoning behind it.

The Hello Sunshine founder, who is mom to daughter Ava, 25, and sons Deacon, 21, and Tennessee, 12, appeared on Wednesday’s episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Host Jimmy Fallon commented on how she is “one of the coolest moms.”

“Your kids got to be proud of you, but you also post things [online] that make you embarrassed. … I love this about you,” Fallon praised.

“I don’t get embarrassed,” Witherspoon corrected Fallon. “My children however,” she continued, making Fallon laugh. “But that’s kind of your job,” Fallon responded.

“That’s their journey,” Witherspoon said. Then she revealed her fabulous parenting philosophy: “I think you should embarrass them enough that they’re funny.”

Um, wait, this is kind of genius! You don’t want to be too cool or boring for your kids or they will never develop hilarious personalities and senses of humor of their own!

Witherspoon recently shared a video with her You’re Cordially Invited co-star Will Ferrell on TikTok, which has 19.8 million views. The duo recreated a TikTok dance trend to “Messy” by Lola Young, which was popularized by Sofia Richie Grainge, in which they dance and lip-synch to the song. (Richie Grainge herself commented on the video, writing, “Life. Made.”)

“Us? Messy?? Wait until you see our movie… 💌👀” Witherspoon quipped in the caption.

At the New York City premiere of the movie on Wednesday night, Witherspoon was asked what her kids think of it by Entertainment Tonight. “Mm … Mine are not amused,” the mom of three said. Ferrell, who is dad to sons Magnus, 20, Mattias, 18, and Axel, 15, shared that his kids “are just surprised that I’m still in the game.”

In a previous interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Big Little Lies star shared that it’s her “job” to embarrass her children. “I just say if you’re not embarrassing your children, you’re not spending enough time with them,” she revealed.

“That’s basically my role. It’s our job, as parents, to really ramp up the embarrassment,” she added.

Don’t worry, one day these kids will appreciate what a cool mom they have!
