Josh O’Connor On Those James Bond Rumors
“Challengers,” “The Crown” and “God’s Own Country” actor Josh O’Connor has responded to recent reports that he could be up for the role of James Bond in EON’s long-running spy franchise.
The 34-year-old British thesp, who will be seen later this alongside former Bond star Daniel Craig in the next “Knives Out” film “Wake Up Dead Man,” is physically closer to the Bond of the Fleming novels – slim 6ft build, dark hair, blue-grey eyes – and has scored much acclaim for his work.
The rumors of his inclusion emerged as discussion about “Kraven: The Hunter” star Aaron Taylor-Johnson being in the running petered out. So what does the actor himself have to say about the matter?
Asked about the possibility by Deadline while attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival to promote the film “Rebuilding,” O’Connor says:
“I have no thoughts, really. The truth is that … I think in the space of a week, I made a joke about, wouldn’t it be funny if I played Bond? Then, me and Daniel [Craig] did an Actors on Actors, and then something else happened, and then suddenly I was James Bond. If I am Bond, I don’t know about it.”
Producer Barbara Broccolli has the final say as to whom plays the part and so far she and fellow producer Michael G. Wilson haven’t indicated when such a decision will be made. Fan response to Josh O’Connor as James Bond has mostly been pretty good by those aware of the actor’s work, and plenty of others who haven’t seen anything he’s done.
In fact recent reports suggest EON is in no hurry to cast the role anytime soon due to reports a few weeks back indicating they and MGM owner Amazon have reached a creative impasse when it comes to the franchise.
O’Connor isn’t shy on work either. He’s been shooting Steven Spielberg’s untitled event film for Universal and Amblin, will co-star with Paul Mescal in “The History of Sound,” and has Kelly Reichardt’s next film “The Mastermind” on his slate.
