Jack Della Maddalena determined to prove worth against Leon Edwards

Jack Della Maddalena intends to show exactly why he is being talked up as future welterweight title contender when he faces former 170-pound champion Leon Edwards in London in March.

The Australian, 28, is a perfect 7-0 in the UFC (17-2 overall) since he graduated to the main roster following a Contender Series win in September 2021 and has so far proved to be a riddle that has been impossible to crack, even as the ability of his competition increased in recent outings.

But on March 22, Della Maddalena takes on the biggest challenge of his career to date in the shape of the former champion Leon Edwards — himself seeking a return to title contention following his unanimous decision title defeat to Belal Muhammad in Manchester last summer.

“I think their plan is to make this sort of a title contention fight, but I guess they never lock anything in,” he told Ariel Helwani, as noted by MMA Fighting. “I think it’s very much performance-based as well, in my opinion. I think if I go in there and have a close split decision over Leon and someone else has a big performance, they might put them in front of me.”

And he says that his intention is to display exactly why he is deserving of a shot at the gold: “I want to go in there and prove a point. Prove a point that I can do to Leon what Belal couldn’t do.”

Edwards vs. Della Maddalena will serve as the main event of the card to be held in London’s O2 Arena, with former 205-pound champ Jan Blachowicz also set to return against Carlos Ulberg.
