At last, we complete the homebrew Nightmare decks for the Wilds of Rhovanion quests. The King’s Quest sees players hunting a dragon on behalf of King Brand. A battle with the Fire-drake serves as the climax of this quest, and it would be a mistake to detract from that epic moment. For this reason, the enemies don’t change much in this deck, but locations and treacheries help distill and enhance the tension around the boss fight. Each card features the work of the great John Howe, which fits the theme perfectly.

For those who want to try this quest for themselves, printed images are included. I encourage players to read the setup carefully, as there are three different encounter sets included in this deck and they all integrate into the original quest in their own way. Snaga Sneak-thief, Collapsed Tunnel, and Forgotten Lair are all shuffled into the encounter deck to start the game. Befouled Well is added to the “Cave” deck, and the Dragon treacheries, Dragon Hunger and Dragon Avarice are set aside and only shuffled into the encounter deck when the Dragon Might encounter set is shuffled into the encounter deck at Stage 2. The original version of this quest was no easy task, and defeating this Nightmare version should be that much more of an accomplishment. Stay warm, and enjoy your adventures in Middle-earth!
