‘He should be leading, not lying’: Trump hits new low, falsely blaming DEI for tragic plane crash
Donald Trump has proven just how low he’s prepared to go in his war against DEI this morning, after implying that the horrific collision between an American Airlines plane and a military helicopter in Washington last night was a result of DEI efforts during previous administrations.
64 passengers aboard the plane and three on the helicopter died after what appears to be a midair accident near Reagan Washington National Airport.
Trump gave all the grace of a moment of silence at a White House briefing, before launching into his baseless theory that there were suspicious circumstances around the standards and skill levels of air traffic controllers and pilots. There is no evidence of any of this.
“We must have only the highest standards for those who work in our aviation system,” Trump said. “I changed the Obama standards from very mediocre at best to extraordinary. And then when I left office and [Joe] Biden took over, he changed them back to lower than ever before.”
Probed on how he’d determined that DEI efforts had anything to do with the accident, Trump said, “because I have common sense, okay? And unfortunately, a lot of people don’t”.
Rather than spend the time speaking in solidarity and compassion to the victims and their loved ones, Trump spent the 40-minute briefing, suggesting that the Federal Aviation Administration had been recruiting people “who suffer severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative”.
Former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg slammed Trump’s tactic calling him “despicable”.
“As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying.
“We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch.
“President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to fire and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe.
“Time for the President to show actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again.”
