Chelsea transfer move for Man Utd star Alejandro Garnacho questioned by Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has questioned Chelsea’s transfer pursuit of Alejandro Garnacho amid speculation Manchester United are set to receive a formal offer.
The Argentina international’s future has been the subject of intense speculation ever since he was left out of Ruben Amorim’s squad ahead of last month’s Manchester derby.
Garnacho has featured only sporadically in the six weeks since that match and following last night’s win over Rangers Amorim refused to rule out the sale of one of the club’s most promising youngsters.
‘I don’t know what will happen,’ he said. ‘Let’s focus on the team and the players that we have here.
‘We don’t know what can happen until the window closes. Anything can happen.’
Napoli, who are scouring the market in order to find a replacement for PSG’s new signing, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, had looked like a potential destination.
The Serie A club, however, have already had a bid rejected for the player as United initially held out for a £70 million transfer fee for the 20-year-old.

Garnacho, for his part, is said to prefer a move to Stamford Bridge where Enzo Maresca is overseeing another month of upheaval.
Chelsea are already well stocked with wingers, including Jadon Sancho who is currently on loan from United for the season, but with Mykhailo Mudryk currently provisionally suspended, Maresca is keen on making another attacking addition to his squad.
Christopher Nkunku and Joao Felix, who only rejoined Chelsea in the summer, could be casualties if Garnacho arrives before the deadline leading Carragher to question when will Chelsea’s spending end.
‘From a financial and sporting perspective, it will be as big a disaster for Chelsea to spend another season in Europe’s second or third tier as City losing their position,’ the former Liverpool defender wrote in the Daily Telegraph.
‘Seeing Chelsea pursuing the likes of central midfielder Douglas Luiz, of Juventus, and Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho begs the question: ‘When will the big money transfer splurge end and the return on the massive investment begin?’
‘Three years on from Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club and having spent £1 billion on new players, it would be an unprecedentedly expensive underachievement for Chelsea to miss out on Champions League football again.
‘They have looked very good on occasions this season, although not so much that the decision to replace Mauricio Pochettino has yet been vindicated.
‘When they faced Fulham on Boxing Day, they went into that match having lost only three times in their previous 32 league matches – to Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. That included just one defeat in Pochettino’s final 15 league games.’
