On February 1, 2025, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its annual winter chess tournament at Henry E. Lackey High School, attracting over 150 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Participants competed against peers at their respective grade levels, while designated practice areas allowed them to engage in friendly pick-up games between official matches. Ethan Claggett, an eighth-grader at Piccowaxen Middle School, expressed his passion for chess, stating, "It requires a lot of strategy and critical thinking." Claggett emerged as the champion of the eighth-grade division, continuing a tradition he shares with his friend Nathaniel Irwin. Having been introduced to chess at the age of four, Irwin appreciates the mental challenges the game presents. Both champions plan to refine their strategies for future competitions, with Irwin affirming, "Why stop now?" The tournament comprised four competitive rounds, with individual champions declared in each grade level. In recognition of their achievements, winners received trophies, while all participants were awarded medals. The tournament was overseen by tournament director Felix Cummings. CCPS continues to serve 28,162 students in grades prekindergarten through 12, providing a rigorous education aimed at fostering character, leadership, and preparation for future success.
