Benedict Cumberbatch Gets Candid About Fatherhood & Mortality: ‘It Does Weigh on Me'

Just because Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t regularly talk about his kids, that doesn’t mean fatherhood isn’t always on his mind. Like most parents, the Doctor Strange star is constantly thinking about his three kids.

In a new interview with Variety, the Emmy winner talked about his three sons — Christopher “Kit,” 9, Hal, 7, and Finn, 6 — who he shares with wife Sophie Hunter, and how they’ve irrevocably changed his life. Since becoming a dad in 2015, he’s become much more cognizant of time passing and reassessed his priorities.

“The minute you have kids this sense of time sinks in far more profoundly,” he said. Like every parent, he’s realizing how much goes by in the proverbial “blink of an eye.” Breaking things down for the outlet, the 48-year-old actor explained that when Finn is 21, he will be in his 60s. It’s a fact that has apparently been rolling around in Cumberbatch’s mind.

“It’s crazy. It’s gone so fast,” the Sherlock star said. “So there’s a huge shift in priorities, and it makes you value what you do with your life in a very different way.”

“It does weigh on me,” he continued. “When you become a parent, your thoughts turn more towards mortality.”

And though that’s awfully sobering, dad life isn’t all doom and gloom for Cumberbatch.

“It’s a joyous thing,” Cumberbatch told People after welcoming Hal in 2017. “I’m very happy to have them in my life, very lucky as well.”

He later gave his sons a hilarious shoutout when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Feb. 2022.

“Should anyone wonder if I can’t recover from this kind of celebration and ego pump, ‘Shut up, Daddy,’ ‘Stupid fart face,’ being hit in the face, fought over … is a daily occurrence for me at home, so thank you for keeping me grounded, boys,” he said in his speech.

And if there’s one thing we certainly hope for this clock-watching “stupid fart face,” it’s that he can stay grounded with his boys and do his best not to blink.
